Maria Markantonatou

Laboratory Director

Maria Markantonatou is Director of the Laboratory of Social and Political Institutions and Professor of Political Sociology in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Aegean. She holds a PhD from the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Sociology from Panteion University. She has worked as a research fellow at Humboldt University in Berlin and Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, as well as at the Max Planck Institutes in Freiburg and Cologne. She was also a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Antwerp and Keele University in the UK. She is a member of the Board of the International Karl Polanyi Society. Her research interests lie in the field of political sociology and include theories of political power and legitimacy, transformations of contemporary politics, the welfare state and globalization, social and political theory, and the consequences of different crises for democracy, institutions, and society.
